For passenger-carrying vehicles, a crack in the windshield does not automatically put the bus out of service. However, according to §393.60, the windshield must be free of any damage that obstructs the driver’s view. If the crack is in the area swept by the windshield wipers and impairs the driver’s vision, it could be a compliance issue and potentially put the bus out of service until it is repaired. Additionally, under §396.3, motor carriers are required to ensure that their vehicles are in safe and proper operating condition at all times. If a crack compromises the safety of the vehicle, it must be addressed.
